ANFA Supports FIFA’s Proposal for Biennial World Cup!

FIFA Soccer World Cup is likely to become biennial.

Earlier in May, FIFA waved green flag to conduct study into the feasibility of hosting soccer World Cup every two years, the move that could have a profound impact on the global football structure.

The proposal, put forth by the Saudi Arabian Football Association, was endorsed by 166 votes to 22, during a virtual FIFA congress in May.

Lately, four Asian nations, including Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, have extended their support for the biennial proposal.

The four counties issued a joint statement stating their support to Gianni Infantino’s pet project, becoming the first member associations from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

We “are uniting in support of proposals to review the FIFA international match calendar as we jointly believe that the debate can only be positive for football’s modernization,” said the four associations in the joint statement.

“Four-year gap between FIFA World Cups is too great – and the window of opportunity too small – to preclude whole generations of talent,” read the joint statement.

“Less than a quarter of current AFC member associations have been represented in almost a century of FIFA World Cup finals in a situation where these tournaments are real drives of development.”
