Nepal Refuses Phase III Trial of COVID-19 Vaccine!

The Nepali Government has denied the permission to conduct the third phase clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine in the country.

Earlier, Nepal had shown interest in conducting late-stage human trials in the country for the coronavirus vaccine developed by the Oxford University, China, and Russia.

However, the National Health Research Council’s latest meeting had concluded that the collective testing of vaccines under trial is not feasible at the moment in the country.

“Import of vaccines comes with a lot of consequences, and the political, economic, and social status of the nation might as well be affected. Thus, we have decided to postpone the collective testing of vaccines against COVID-19, for now, to prevent the nation from facing any consequences as such,” said NHRC Secretary Dr. Pradeep Gyawali.

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has bestowed the responsibility of studying, researching, and analyzing the COVID-19 vaccines developed across the world upon the NHRC.

In response, the NHRC had conducted meetings with all the concerned authorities and experts to weigh the consequences of testing coronavirus vaccines in Nepal.

“It is not guaranteed that the testing of vaccines will be successful in Nepal via collective testing. The experts undisputedly said that the vaccines should be tested only after detailed study and analysis,” said Dr. Gyawali.

However, the Nepali Government has decided to permit the clinical and laboratory tests of the vaccine.
